Public Sector Duty

  3. Public Sector Duty

All public sector bodies have a duty to eliminate discrimination, promote equality, and protect the human rights of both their staff and those to which they provide services. This obligation is set out under Section 42 of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Act 2014.

The OIP recognises its responsibility to eliminate discrimination, promote equality of opportunity, and protect the human rights of public sector staff and service users. Our commitment to human rights is reflected in the key values of our organisation.

The Inspectorate has developed a Public Sector Duty Action Plan, which was published in June 2024. The plan sets out a number of actions under the guidance of the working group.

The OIP’s Public Sector Duty working group coordinates the Office’s Public Sector Duty activities and oversees the OIP’s Public Sector Duty action plan. The composition of the working group is intended to broadly represent the functions of the Office, and includes representation from senior management.
